E-Cigarettes banned at the Daily Express
A report in the British satirical and current affairs magazine, Private Eye, revealed (Issue
1350, October 17th, 2013), that staff at the Daily Express had been ordered not to smoke electronic cigarettes on
the premises.
Private Eye reported on a memo to Express staff as saying "Company Policy will be for them to be
treated in exactly the same way as conventional cigarettes" - and any members of staff who had "strong opinions" on
the matter were asked to contact the managing editor.
The Private Eye report went on to comment that "Someone who could indeed take a strong
view on the subject might be one R. Desmond, who a while back made a little investment in the 5 Colors
e-cigarettes brand. Despite a big promotional push over the past year in the Express, Star and OK! titles,
accompanied by "news" stories and pictures of the likes of Cheryl Cole, her Girls Aloud bandmates and Tamara
Ecclestone sucking on the ghastly devices, e-cigs have turned out to be a damp e-squib for Desmond. Many
cartons of the things lie gathering dust in the basement of Northern and Shell Towers."
